The ADAC, Germany's largest auto club, has ranked the Tesla Model Y Performance last in a four-way test of electric SUVs. It scored 2.2 on the German school-grade scale, where 1 is best.
The results
- 1st: Mercedes-Benz GLC 400 EQ, 1.8
- 2nd (tie): BMW iX3 50 xDrive and Volvo EX60 P10 Electric Ultra AWD, 1.9
- 4th: Tesla Model Y Performance AWD, 2.2
Where the Tesla lost points
- Range: 443 km in the ADAC's test, the shortest of the four. The BMW managed 669 km.
- Fast charging: 35 minutes from 10% to 80%, compared with 17 minutes for the Volvo. The three rivals use 800-volt systems; the Tesla stays at 400 volts.
- AC charging: 11 kW maximum, against 22 kW on the others (standard on the Volvo, optional on the BMW and Mercedes).
- Towing and cargo: 1.6 tonnes braked and 420 litres of measured trunk space, both the lowest in the test.
- Build quality: the ADAC criticized uneven panel gaps on the body.
Where it won
At €62,990, the Model Y Performance was the cheapest car in the test; teslamag.de says the rivals cost at least €8,000 more. It was the quickest from 0 to 100 km/h, at a claimed 3.5 seconds. Its 20.2 kWh/100 km made it the second most efficient. The ADAC also said it had the best interior materials of the four.
