BYD owners in Germany can now get paid to let E.ON time their home charging. The offer is available to order now, according to electrive.net. It covers new and existing BYD customers.

How it works

  • Bonus: 12 cents for each kWh charged smartly at home, for at least 24 months.
  • Eligible cars: all of BYD's battery-electric models and plug-in hybrids.
  • Control: the Mein E.ON app. Drivers set a departure time and target charge level, and the app manages charging in Smart mode. They can switch to immediate charging at any time.
  • Launch extra: a one-off €80 bonus for BYD drivers who are new E.ON customers and sign up for a suitable tariff.

What it's worth

E.ON estimates an average saving of about €20 a month at 170 kWh of charging a month, or roughly €490 over two years. BYD's own example is 2,000 kWh a year, which earns €240 annually. Customers need a compatible E.ON electricity tariff.

What's next

The companies announced their partnership in September. They plan to expand to other European markets and to add bidirectional (vehicle-to-grid) charging. They haven't said when that will be available or which BYD models will support it.
