E.ON Drive Infrastructure (EDRI) Italy has acquired all of Smatrics EnBW Italia, taking over four high-power charging hubs that are already running along major routes in northern Italy.

The four sites

  • Brixen-Vahrn, South Tyrol, on the Brenner corridor: 20 ultra-fast points.
  • Palmanova, near Udine, on the Alpine-Adriatic corridor: 12.
  • Gruaro, Venice area, between the A28 and A4: 16.
  • Trezzo sull'Adda, Milan area, on the A4: 16.

EDRI says the sites have plenty of grid capacity, leaving room for more chargers and upgrades. "By integrating these hubs into our network, we strengthen our presence along some of Europe's most important transport corridors," said Michele De Gaspari, EDRI's regional director for Southern Europe.

Why Smatrics left

Smatrics EnBW opened its first Italian site, on the Brenner, at the end of 2024 and added the others by February 2026. A spokesperson told electrive the company needs "unrestricted focus" on its core market and will now concentrate entirely on Austria.

The bigger network

Electrive says EDRI operates in 11 European countries, with about 200 staff and about 10,000 public charge points. In Italy it is also building 104 high-power chargers at 18 Autostrade per l'Italia service areas, which it expects to finish by the end of 2026. The Brenner and A4 corridors are main routes for Tesla drivers too.
