Frankfurt has passed 100 zero-emission buses. The city says 109 of its 418 buses, 26%, now run without diesel.
The fleet
- 77 battery-electric buses and 32 fuel-cell buses.
- The newest are nine Ebusco buses operated by Transdev on lines 56 and 71. They charge at the MHKW Heddernheim site.
- Range is 250–300 km per charge, according to the city.
- Operating costs are about 40% lower than for diesel buses, the city says.
What's next
Ten more electric buses are due in 2027 and 39 in 2028. The "Bündel H" line package goes electric from December 2028. Frankfurt aims to have its entire bus fleet emission-free by 2033.
«With more than 100 e-buses, the transport transition in Frankfurt is visible to passengers and has become part of everyday life,» said transport councillor Yannick Schwander (translated from German).
Where the power comes from
The battery buses charge with electricity from the Heddernheim waste-to-energy plant, run by FES and Mainova. electrive points out that about 47% of that plant's recent output was renewable. That makes the buses locally emission-free, but not run on 100% green power.
