Pennsylvania has awarded $37 million to build 515 public EV charging ports in the Philadelphia region. PennDOT Secretary Mike Carroll announced the money, which comes from the Community Charging phase of the federal National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) program.

Biggest awards

  • Positive Energy: $7,217,193 for 54 DC fast-charging ports at 11 Philadelphia Parking Authority lots.
  • PNE Solutions America: $4,465,575 for 24 DC fast-charging ports at five sites, including Grays Ferry Shopping Center and the Shops at Wissinoming.
  • It's Electric PA: $2,928,120 for 157 on-street Level 2 ports across 13 Philadelphia neighborhoods.
  • Voltpost: several smaller awards for on-street Level 2 ports in towns including Doylestown, West Chester, Drexel Hill and Norristown.

The bigger picture

PennDOT says the state is directing more than $100 million in total federal funds through its Community Charging rounds. That is on top of the $58 million already spent on highway corridors. It says Pennsylvania has opened 54 NEVI-funded stations, more than double any other state, with 34 more in planning or construction.

The money pays for a mix of on-street AC chargers and DC fast chargers at shopping centers and parking lots. The awards are for planned sites, so the chargers are not built yet. For Tesla drivers, more fast-charging sites mean more options beyond Superchargers, as long as the new DC stations offer NACS plugs or work with an adapter.
