The Polestar 2, the fastback that went up against the Tesla Model 3 for six years, is out of production. Polestar confirmed to both EV Powered and InsideEVs that the last cars have been built at its plant in Luqiao, China.

"Polestar 2 very recently ended production," a Polestar UK spokesperson told EV Powered. "Sales, however still remain open in the UK into 2027. We plan to pay tribute to the first generation Polestar 2 soon as we prepare for a new era with the arrival of the Polestar 2 successor in 2027."

How many were sold

The two outlets give different totals. InsideEVs puts sales at roughly 200,000 units worldwide. EV Powered says sales came to just under 300,000 and that the car accounts for two of every three Polestars ever sold. Both agree it was the brand's best-selling model.

History

  • It launched in 2020 as Polestar's first mainstream model, built on the CMA platform.
  • A 2023 update swapped the front-wheel-drive base versions for rear-wheel drive. InsideEVs says EPA range peaked at 314 miles.
  • It was dropped from the U.S. market last year after tariff increases on Chinese-built EVs.
  • UK prices currently start at £40,210.

What comes next

A new Polestar 2 is due in 2027, followed by the compact Polestar 7 SUV in 2028. EV Powered expects the new car to move from the current 400V architecture to Volvo's 800V SPA3 platform, though Polestar hasn't confirmed this. It also reports that CEO Michael Lohscheller has said the car will stay a fastback.
