The banana at Tesla's next-gen Roadster reveal was a stopwatch, not a prop. Zack Pittman of Dallas production company CINELIVE wrote on X on Saturday, Oct. 17, 2026 that it was an "analog stopwatch" and that a laser dropped it the instant the car's tires started to roll, Tesla North reported.
You found it. The banana at the Next Gen Roadster reveal wasn't an accident. It was an analog stopwatch. A laser triggered the drop the instant the tires started to roll. We hung it at exactly the car's 0-60 time at the time of 1 second. Banana hits the ground. Car hits the laser wall. Same frame.
Pittman says CINELIVE designed and broadcast the show for Tesla and SpaceX. In his thread, the banana hung on fishing line above the left edge of the opening, with a laser sensor on the rear tire. The height was set for one second of free fall. "Gravity was the timer," he wrote. He then said that live, "we broke that record and hit 0.81 seconds." Tesla North noted it has not independently verified the setup.
Tesla showed the Roadster on Oct. 15 at SpaceX's McGregor site and posted a clip of a 0–60 run in 0.81 seconds without saying which configuration made it. Related: our 0.81-second specs story and main reveal.
