Ford is adding an EV battery plant at its Almussafes factory near Valencia, Spain. Plant management confirmed the new battery pack assembly facility at a meeting of the site's electrification observatory committee on Tuesday, Oct. 20, 2026, the UGT union told Spanish outlets elEconomista, ABC and El Español. It will assemble packs for Ford's future vehicles on a 100 percent electric platform.
What's confirmed and what isn't
Almussafes already has a battery assembly plant, but it serves hybrids such as the Kuga. The workforce for the new EV plant, and any staff transfers from other parts of the complex, won't be decided until the second quarter of 2027, the union said. Ford has not disclosed the plant's capacity, investment or production start date, Motor16 notes. In 2023 Ford applied for Spanish EV subsidy money for a battery facility here with an investment it put at €188 million, then withdrew the application, elEconomista reports.
Geely joint venture and idle days
The site is moving toward a joint venture with China's Geely that will own and run production. From 2028, two Geely SUVs and a Ford multi-energy crossover are due to join the Kuga and a Bronco-family model at Valencia, El Español reports. For now the plant builds only one model, and UGT estimates a surplus of 200 to 300 workers. Vehicle production is paused from Oct. 19 to Nov. 11 and again from Dec. 16 to year-end under a temporary layoff scheme.
