General Motors says its next generation of electric vehicles will need 20% less battery for equivalent or more range. The company laid out its fourth-generation EV platform at its GM Forward event in New York City on Wednesday, Oct. 21, 2026, built around lithium-manganese-rich (LMR) battery cells, InsideEVs reported from the event.

The numbers GM gave

GM said the fourth-generation EVs bring a 15% reduction in vehicle mass, 20% greater energy efficiency, 20% less battery capacity overall and 25% better aerodynamic performance. Reworked drive units and power electronics cut the number of parts in each motor by 40%, according to InsideEVs.

GM says LMR cells cost less than high-nickel cells while being 33% more energy-dense than lithium iron phosphate (LFP) cells. GreenCars, which also attended, reports the chemistry costs about the same as LFP. The prismatic cells will be structurally integrated into the vehicles, GM's director of global EV architecture Zach Walker told InsideEVs, though he would not say whether that means cell-to-pack or a module design. GreenCars says GM evaluated more than 300,000 cell recipes in AI simulation before building physical prototypes, and has begun retooling the Ultium Cells plant in Spring Hill, Tennessee, for LMR.

What GM didn't say

GM gave no firm timeline and named no vehicles for the new EV platform. President Mark Reuss said it will serve "a remarkable set of vehicles in several segments" and launch "very shortly"; a spokesperson told InsideEVs that means GM's "highest-volume" segments, its crossover SUVs. "When the U.S. market is ready for EVs in large numbers, we will be there for them," Reuss said.

New central computer

A single Central Compute Unit, powered mainly by an Nvidia Thor chip according to GreenCars, replaces dozens of separate control modules. GM says it has 30% less wiring than current EVs, 40 times more processing power and 50% faster cellular connectivity. It debuts on the 2028 Cadillac Escalade IQ, alongside GM's first eyes-off highway driving system, then spreads to full-size trucks and SUVs, three-row crossovers and the fourth-generation EVs. GM also announced OnStar AI, a custom-branded version of Google Gemini starting on the 2027 Cadillac Lyriq.

What it means for Tesla

InsideEVs notes the centralized computer follows the path Tesla and Rivian took. GreenCars points out one difference: GM does not appear to be following Ford, Tesla and many Chinese automakers toward large die castings and structural battery packs.
