Elon Musk used this weekend's X Takeover, a fan-organized gathering at Giga Texas in Austin, to give Tesla's artificial-intelligence group a new name: "Tesla SI," shorthand for superintelligence. Musk joined the event by video, according to All Things Elon, which reported on the keynote.
What changed
On paper this is only a rebrand; no new product, team structure or budget was announced alongside it, based on the coverage we reviewed. But the label matters as a signal. It positions Tesla's AI work, which spans FSD, the Cybercab robotaxi and the Optimus humanoid robot, as a core pillar of the company on the same footing as vehicles and energy, rather than a software feature bolted onto cars.
The rest of the keynote
Musk ranged well beyond Tesla. On chips, All Things Elon reports he said he still has a lot to learn about chip making and that the Terafab project would start with conventional equipment before moving to custom machines aimed at higher wafer throughput. He also argued on X that electricity production is "the best metric for the true strength of any large-scale economy," a framing that conveniently favors a company selling batteries, solar and chargers while building power-hungry AI compute. He also touched on SpaceX's Starship.
The timing lined up with Tesla's robotaxi push. The same weekend, Tesla's Robotaxi account said more than 300 Cybercabs now serve Austin, an eightfold increase in 30 days, and AI software head Ashok Elluswamy wrote "Dallas soon," as Teslarati reported.
What it means for investors
Tesla reports third-quarter results on October 21. The "Tesla SI" branding suggests management wants the AI narrative front and center on that call, so expect questions about how much is being spent on compute and chips, and what the Terafab plans cost. A name doesn't change the numbers, though: delivery trends, margins and concrete robotaxi expansion dates are still what will move the stock in the near term.
What it means for owners
Nothing changes in your car today. FSD remains a supervised driver-assistance system that requires your attention, regardless of what the team building it is called.
We have not yet seen an official Tesla filing or press release describing the rename; we'll update this story if Tesla formalizes it.
