Rivian is buying its way into the world-model race. Rivian said on Thursday, Oct. 22, 2026 that it has acquired Third Dimension AI, a startup whose platform turns real-world driving data into "high-fidelity, controllable 3D environments." Rivian will use it to generate synthetic data and test its driver-assistance and self-driving software. Financial terms weren't disclosed.

The deal

  • Third Dimension was founded in 2024 by CEO Tolga Kart and Piotr Sokólski. It raised $7 million in seed funding, TechCrunch reported.
  • Its 15-person team, most of them in the UK, joins Rivian's autonomy and AI group led by SVP James Philbin. The deal also lets Rivian grow its London AI hub.
  • Rivian says it gets more than 400,000 driving sequences a day from customer vehicles that have camera sharing turned on, according to Philbin.

Why simulation

"These are not synthetic kind of video game styles, they're real things that happen in the world, but now we get that extra dial of being able to move the cameras around, shift other agents, have maybe different lighting or weather conditions," Philbin told TechCrunch. The point is to test rare edge cases without waiting for them to happen on real roads.

Rivian plans to release a supervised, hands-free system for surface streets and highways by the end of this year. R2 robotaxis for the Uber app are due in 2028, TechCrunch said. It's the same playbook Tesla describes for FSD and Robotaxi: train on huge amounts of fleet video, then check the results in simulation.
