Home batteries are becoming a grid resource in Puerto Rico. Sunrun says participation in its Puerto Rico distributed power plant has doubled to more than 60,000 customers, representing nearly 70,000 home batteries that frequently deliver 45 MW for four hours at a time.

Since April, Sunrun has dispatched the fleet more than 60 times to help cover energy shortfalls and prevent rolling blackouts. During unusually hot weather this fall, it sent power to the grid for 18 consecutive days beginning October 13. Enrollment has grown from about 4,000 customers in 2024 to more than 30,000 in 2025.

Customers choose how much stored energy to share and are paid for it. Electrek notes Puerto Rico residential electricity averaged 26.36 cents per kWh in August, versus a US average of 18.16 cents, according to the EIA.
