Another large battery built on Tesla's Megapack 2 XL is now running in Texas. Nightpeak Energy announced on Tuesday, Oct. 13, 2026, that its Bocanova 2 battery storage project in Brazoria County, near Alvin and the Houston metro area, has reached financial close and commercial operation. The 150 MW plant has a two-hour duration, so it stores 300 MWh. It actually began commercial operation on Sept. 17. Nightpeak waited until it closed the financing to announce it.
What came online
Bocanova 2 is the second phase at the same site. The first 150 MW phase, Bocanova 1, began commercial operation in August 2025, and Nightpeak's project page says it also uses Megapack 2 XL systems built at Tesla's Lathrop, California, Megafactory. With phase two running, the Bocanova site now has 300 MW of capacity on the ERCOT grid. Nightpeak did not give Bocanova 1's duration, so the site's total energy capacity (MWh) has not been published.
The money side, per the release: Bocanova 2 runs under a long-term offtake agreement with an unnamed "investment-grade counterparty." MUFG Bank provided a tax equity bridge loan and a construction-to-term loan, and U.S. Bank provided traditional tax equity. Nightpeak did not give the project's cost, the contract price or its term, or say how many Megapack units are installed.
Why Texas keeps buying batteries
Nightpeak's pitch is the same one behind many recent Megapack orders: fast-growing demand from data centers and other large loads. "We're seeing large loads come to the grid at a pace and scale that is fundamentally changing how the power sector plans for new demand," co-founder and CEO Paris Hays said in the release, adding that meeting it takes "resources that can respond quickly as conditions change." Nightpeak, an Oakland-based developer backed by Dallas private equity fund Energy Spectrum Partners VIII, says it has a portfolio of more than 1 GW of operating and de-risked capacity across gas generation, battery storage and powered land.
It is the second AI-and-grid storage project in two days to name Tesla hardware. On Oct. 13 we covered Taiwan's Apollo Power ordering 260 Megapack 2XL units for storage tied to AI data centers.
What it means for Tesla investors
A single 300 MWh project is small next to Tesla's quarterly numbers. The company deployed 13.7 GWh of storage in Q3 2026 (our Q3 energy breakdown). Nightpeak's release doesn't say which quarter Tesla counted the Bocanova 2 hardware in. Still, the project shows something that matters for the energy business: a repeat customer coming back to the same site for more Megapacks, with bank financing behind it. Tesla reports Q3 results, including energy revenue and margins, after the market close on Wednesday, Oct. 21.
