Tesla Megapacks will supply a new 200 MWh battery portfolio for a Colorado electric co-op. Madison Energy Infrastructure and CORE Electric Cooperative announced this week that they plan 50 MW / 200 MWh of storage across three Colorado sites, with commercial operation expected by September 2027, ColoradoBiz and BESS News reported.

The details

  • Tesla's role: the projects use Tesla Megapack technology and are among the first backed by Madison's $50 million agreement with Tesla.
  • Size: it's Madison's largest distributed storage deployment to date.
  • Who it serves: CORE is a member-owned utility serving more than 375,000 residents along Colorado's Front Range, across about 5,000 square miles, per BESS News and Drive Tesla.
  • Why: "As electricity demand grows, this storage will help us manage peak demand, control power costs, and maintain reliable service," said Chris Hildred, CORE's chief energy supply officer.

Context

The sites are part of Madison's Community Infrastructure initiative, launched Sept. 18, which aims for another 1 GW of distributed solar and storage by 2028, partly to meet demand from data centers and manufacturing. Tesla Energy has been leaning on that demand: see xAI's $269 million Megapack purchases and the Texas Megafactory start.
