Tesla does not break out Japan deliveries in its quarterly reports, but its local account keeps score another way. On Wednesday, Oct. 14, Tesla Japan said the Model Y was again the No. 1 foreign-brand vehicle by model in Japan for September 2026, extending a run that already covered the first half of the year. Elon Musk amplified the post the same day.
What Tesla Japan actually claimed
The Japanese-language announcement said the world's best-selling car, the Model Y, "continued" to take the top spot among foreign-brand models by new registrations in September, and asked shoppers to book a test drive. It did not publish a September unit count for Tesla or for the Model Y alone.
That ranking matters in a market still dominated by Toyota, Honda and other domestic brands. Being No. 1 among imported nameplates is a narrower trophy than overall market share, but it is the claim Tesla Japan keeps repeating, and it now spans both the first half of 2026 and September.
The JAIA "Others" proxy
Drive Tesla Canada, citing Japan Automobile Importers Association figures, put September registrations in JAIA's "Others" category — which includes Tesla and other brands that are not broken out separately — at 3,348, more than double the 1,471 recorded a year earlier. That would place "Others" second among foreign automakers for the month, behind Mercedes-Benz's 5,983 and ahead of Volkswagen's 3,078. Drive Tesla Canada stressed that those figures are not exclusively Tesla.
The same reporting put "Others" regular passenger registrations for the third quarter at 8,014, up from 3,471 a year earlier and the category's strongest quarter on record. Through the first nine months of 2026, "Others" registrations had already passed 20,000, nearly double the full-year 2025 total for that bucket.
Why it matters before Oct. 21 earnings
Globally, Tesla delivered 486,532 vehicles in Q3 2026, down about 2% from the prior year's tax-credit rush. Japan is a small slice of that total, but it is one of the few markets where Tesla can still point to a clear local model ranking while China retail and some Western volumes have been harder. AUTOCAR Japan earlier reported that for the first half of 2026 the Model Y was No. 1 among all foreign-brand models by new registrations — electric and gas — with about 48% of foreign-brand EV registrations in that period per JATO Dynamics data Tesla Japan has cited.
Tesla Japan also says it now runs more than 40 retail and experience locations nationwide. For investors, the clean takeaway is directional: Model Y is still winning the import-model scoreboard in Japan, importer proxies for Tesla's bucket are growing fast year over year, and the company still will not hand you an exact Japan number. Treat the JAIA "Others" line as a ceiling that includes other brands, not as Tesla's Japan delivery count.
