Anthropic co-founder Jack Clark told global finance officials that AI could grow the US economy by almost 50% by 2030, citing one of the company's internal models, at the IMF and World Bank annual meetings in Bangkok on Saturday, Oct. 17, 2026, CNBC reported.
The forecast
The model puts potential US GDP at $44 trillion, versus just over $30 trillion now. "It sounds very outlandish, I know," Clark said.
He said it assumes "the technology continuing to get better," and that growth that large would require new industries and inventions to be created.
The warning
Clark called for international cooperation on "unusual and serious rules" for AI and said policymakers have "a small number of years" to impose safeguards, AI Affairs reported.
"We should expect that in the coming years, the whole pace of progress of not just AI but science as a whole will speed up, and this will feel confusing and disorienting, and will bring with it great wealth and potentially great peril," he said, according to CNBC.
"Being able to use AI for science opens us up to the misuses of science as well, biological and cyber weapons," he added.
Clark also said AI is already causing job losses in high-exposure fields such as call centers and customer service, while boosting employment in scientific research, AI Affairs reported.
