Canceling an app subscription on an iPhone may now come with a pitch. Apple has made Retention Messaging available to App Store developers. The messages «appear in the cancellation flow and can include text, images, or a special offer,» Apple says on its developer site.

Developers set them up in App Store Connect for auto-renewable subscriptions, including which subscribers are eligible and how long to wait between messages. A Retention Messaging API, available by request, lets apps pick a message for each subscriber. 9to5Mac reports developers can create up to 10 retention messages per app. Apple first announced the feature at WWDC.

It goes further than Apple's 2024 Win-Back Offers, which only reached people after they had already canceled, 9to5Mac notes. The Verge predicts these messages will show up in many apps very soon.
