Google's Gemini assistant can now use your Gmail, Calendar and other Google apps to answer questions while you drive. Google began rolling out Personal Intelligence for Gemini on Android Auto on Tuesday, Oct. 20, 2026, with cars that have Google built-in getting it "in the coming months," the company said.
What it does
With permission, Gemini connects to Workspace apps including Gmail and Google Calendar, plus Google Photos, Google Maps, YouTube and Search. Google's examples: asking "What's my flight gate? And is my flight on time?" on the way to the airport, saying "Take me to my doctor's appointment" without looking up the address, or "Find the car wash from the photo I took last week and navigate there."
Privacy and who gets it
The feature is off until you turn it on in Gemini settings, and cars with Google built-in only give personal answers when your phone is connected, Google says. It is rolling out to personal Google accounts for users 18 and older, not Workspace business, enterprise or education accounts, and not in the European Economic Area, Switzerland, the United Kingdom or Nigeria. The Verge notes that Ford, GM, Honda, Nissan, Volvo and Polestar sell cars with Google built-in. GM also said on Oct. 21 that a custom-branded Gemini called OnStar AI starts on the 2027 Cadillac Lyriq, GreenCars reports.
What it means for Tesla
Tesla cars don't run Android Auto; Tesla uses Grok, developed by SpaceX's xAI, for the AI assistant in customer cars, CNBC notes. Google's move puts a more personal assistant into rival brands' cars. For the latest on Grok, see our story on Grok Bot in X Chat and on Android.
