A South Korean consumer group wants regulators to stop Tesla from selling FSD to owners who can't use it. Citizens United for Consumer Sovereignty plans to file a complaint with the Korea Fair Trade Commission (KFTC) on Thursday, Electrek reports, citing Reuters, which reviewed it.
The issue is where the cars are built. The Model S, Model X and Cybertruck come from U.S. plants and enter Korea under the KORUS free trade agreement, which recognizes U.S. safety standards, so they are the only Teslas that got FSD (Supervised) there. The Model 3 and Model Y sold in Korea come from Giga Shanghai and need Korean approval that FSD doesn't have. InsideEVs says data show 99% of Teslas imported into Korea last year can't activate the feature.
Only about 20% of Teslas registered in the country can use FSD, according to Electrek. Tesla has sold more than 170,000 Shanghai-built cars in Korea since 2023.
Tesla charged Korean buyers a one-time 9.043 million won (about $6,726) for FSD before moving to a 150,000-won monthly subscription in August. The complaint comes a week after a Seoul court rejected a refund suit from Korean FSD buyers.
