Rivian's electric van is getting its first major hardware upgrade. In its Q3 presentation, Rivian said the new versions, "specifically designed to expand route coverage into more rural networks," began delivering in early October.
What changed
- A larger LFP pack with 129 kWh usable, per the EPA certification issued Sept. 17 for 2027-model vans. Rivian says it adds about 30% range.
- A new dual-motor AWD version. Eletric-vehicles.com reports both motors are rated at 265 kW.
- Only the larger EDV 700 and the matching Rivian Commercial Van get the upgrade. The 500 keeps its current pack and front-wheel drive.
- In unadjusted EPA lab tests, the large FWD van covered 355.5 miles and the AWD about 322 miles. Those figures run far above real-world range.
Real-world range
Rivian rates the current 700 at up to 160 miles. Both outlets estimate the new FWD van at around 208–210 miles. Electrek puts the AWD version at about 195–200 miles. Eletric-vehicles.com reports curb weight rises to 8,223 lb for FWD and 8,677 lb for AWD, up from 7,295 lb, and DC charging stays at 100 kW. Rivian did not say how many upgraded vans it has delivered.
Why it matters
Commercial vans are a steady part of Rivian's business beside the R2 ramp described in its Q3 results. Tesla has no electric van, so this is a segment Rivian and Ford have largely to themselves in the US.
