OpenAI's CEO is trying to calm PC builders. On the Cheeky Pint podcast, Sam Altman said that «it's quite terrible to have everybody have a bunch of the world's limited supply of DRAM sitting in their own computer and being used five percent of the time,» The Verge reports. TechRadar says the remarks «went down just as badly as you'd expect.»
Altman then responded on election night, according to both outlets. He changed his display name to «Ram Altman» and wrote that he does «want the world to have tons of memory and people to put as much as they want in their computers,» adding that the remark had been taken out of context and that he has long argued for more memory production.
The backdrop is a global memory shortage. AI data centers are buying up RAM, which is pushing up prices for consumer tech. The Verge notes that Intel expects the shortage to last through at least next year and that SK Hynix has said it could run until 2030.
