Tesla has asked Australia to allow a driverless vehicle trial in 2027 and to bring forward its national self-driving law by two years. The request is in an Oct. 16 submission to a parliamentary productivity inquiry, which was published on Wednesday, Oct. 28, 2026, ACS Information Age and techAU reported.
What Tesla wants
- An automated vehicle trial in 2027, run under permits.
- The Automated Vehicle Safety Law (AVSL) moved forward from 2029 to 2027.
Tesla said the National Transport Commission first proposed a national framework in 2016 and that progress "remains fragmented". It cited modelling by the Autonomous Vehicle Association of Australia that puts the benefits at more than $10 billion.
The wider picture
The Cybercab is touring Australian Tesla showrooms but cannot be tested on public roads, ACS Information Age said. The Transport Workers' Union has called for 95% of jobs to go to human drivers in the early years of any rollout, falling to at least 85%.
Tesla's FSD (Supervised) has covered more than 160 million km in Australia since it launched there in September 2025.
