Tesla says it could have sold more cars in the third quarter if it had more batteries. In its Q3 2026 update released after the close on Wednesday, Oct. 21, 2026, Tesla wrote that "battery availability continued to be the limiting factor in increasing auto volumes in the quarter" and that it "ended the quarter with the largest backlog for our passenger vehicles in four years." The deck gives no backlog figure, order count or deposit total, EV (eletric-vehicles.com) noted.

What changed from Q2

  • In July, the Q2 deck called battery pack capacity expansion "the main limiting factor to near-term vehicle production volume increase." The Q3 deck now says batteries limited volumes during the quarter itself.
  • On the Q2 call, CFO Vaibhav Taneja described the backlog as the "largest order backlog since 2023"; the Q3 deck says four years, EV reported.
  • The outlook now says deliveries depend on "allocation decisions between sale to customers and use for our owned and operated fleet." Cars kept for Tesla's own robotaxi fleet do not count as deliveries.

The numbers in Tesla's own deck

  • Deliveries: 486,532, down 2.1% from 497,099 a year earlier; production: 464,391.
  • Deliveries exceeded production by 22,141, the second straight quarter of inventory drawdown.
  • Global vehicle inventory: 11 days of supply, from 15 at the end of June and 27 at the end of March.
  • Model 3 and Model Y deliveries: 478,237, down 0.6%; other models (Cybertruck, Model S, Model X, Semi): 8,295, down 47.9%.
  • Records: deliveries in Canada, Australia, Japan and Taiwan, and production at Gigafactory Berlin (no figures given).

The pushback

Electrek argued the demand claim does not fully fit the numbers: Tesla also listed "lower vehicle average selling price" among the drags on revenue, and Electrek said automakers that cannot build cars fast enough usually raise prices. It noted Tesla is also sending cells to Megapacks, the Cybercab and Semi ramps, and higher Model Y volumes. EV said the backlog, the battery shortfall and the share of output kept for the fleet are the three numbers that would test the claim, and none is in the deck.
