No rear window, no mirrors, and now a camera instead. Cybercab passengers in Austin can now pull up a live rear-camera feed on the center screen during a ride. They can also switch on a quiet mode that darkens the whole display. Both appeared on Friday, Oct. 23, 2026, Teslarati and kWh Garage reported.
What riders found
- Rider Ethan McKanna spotted the camera view late Friday night: "You can now open the camera to view what's behind you in Cybercab!"
- Tesla UI engineer Evan (@CarCoder) added: "You can also tap it to see more cameras, and swipe it up or down to hide and show."
- Rider Jackson Blatz posted video of the quiet mode option on Friday morning.
- Until now, riders only saw the rear and repeater feeds on the "Please Exit Safely" screen at the end of a trip.
Fast turnaround
Earlier this month, a rider asked Tesla to let passengers view the cameras at any time, and Evan replied "In development," Teslarati reported. About two weeks later the feature shipped. Tesla AI senior staff engineer Yun-Ta Tsai wrote that the "(human) camera view tuning is optimized with Grok," but didn't say which part Grok handled.
Tesla hasn't published release notes and hasn't said whether either feature will come to Model Y Robotaxis or customer cars, kWh Garage noted. Tesla says it aims to deliver the first Cybercabs to customers before the end of 2026.
