Italy says it supports a swift European Union approval of Tesla Assisted Driving. That is the name Tesla now uses in Europe for FSD (Supervised). Deputy Prime Minister and Infrastructure Minister Matteo Salvini said so on X on Thursday, Oct. 29, after what he called a "very positive and constructive conversation" with Elon Musk. Musk replied: "Much appreciated. Thank you!"

Support, not approval

Salvini's post is a statement of support. It is not an approval. Drive Tesla Canada notes that Tesla's application is still under review at Italy's Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport. Not a Tesla App reads the statement as backing for the EU-wide process, not a separate national approval.

Where the EU process stands

  • April 10, 2026: the Dutch regulator RDW issued the first EU approval. Other member states can recognise it nationally.
  • 10 countries so far: the Netherlands, Belgium, Denmark, Lithuania, Estonia, Slovenia, Czechia, Croatia, Slovakia and Latvia. Not a Tesla App says Latvia became the 10th on Oct. 26. Together they hold only about 14.3% of the EU population, according to Drive Tesla Canada.
  • The bar for EU-wide approval: a qualified majority in the Technical Committee on Motor Vehicles. That means at least 15 member states representing 65% of the EU population.
  • Germany said on Oct. 6 that it backs swift approval, after agreeing conditions with Tesla on driver responsibility and speed limits.
  • Timing: Not a Tesla App says a vote is expected no earlier than December.

Italy has about 59 million people, roughly 13% of the EU total, so its vote matters for the population threshold. Not a Tesla App expects any EU approval to cover HW4 cars only.
