Waymo is adding nearly 250 square miles of driverless service over the next week in five metro areas: Los Angeles, Nashville, Orlando, San Diego and the San Francisco Bay Area. Waymo announced the expansion in a blog post on Oct. 27, 2026. Electrek reports that the updated maps are already in the Waymo app.

Where it's growing

  • Los Angeles: down the coast into the South Bay, through Manhattan Beach and Redondo Beach to Torrance.
  • Nashville: further south, including the zoo.
  • Orlando: coverage on the east side nearly doubles, with more service downtown.
  • San Diego: north to La Jolla, taking in University City and Clairemont.
  • Bay Area: further into the South Bay, with a new BART connection at Berryessa station in San Jose. Electrek says the area now runs from San Francisco down the Peninsula to San Jose and Campbell.

Context

Waymo didn't break out square miles by city or say how many vehicles it is adding. Electrek notes that Nashville opened to public riders in April and San Diego only on Sept. 1. Waymo says it now runs in 15 US metros with more than 500,000 paid rides a week.

The news landed on the same day Elon Musk said the robotaxi race "was never a real contest" (our story). It also came a day after Tesla's own Houston geofence expansion.
